Stripped Bare by Heidi McLaughlin

Stripped Bare by Heidi McLaughlin
A review by Cee Cee Houston for the Ghost Pepper Babes
4.5 stars

Stripped Bare takes a familiar story and makes it, its own. There are moments where you go aww I know, I’ve heard something like that before. But Finn McCormick is not Edward Lewis any more than Macey is Vivian Ward. she does have Vivian’s feistiness although sometimes it takes a while to come out. She takes a lot from Finn mainly because she can’t resist the hot, sexy bossy alpha S.O.B.
Macey was 17 when she got knocked up and her baby daddy left their hometown for college and another life. He never knew she was pregnant and went merrily on his way, while Macey had to struggle living with her drug-addict mom, and raising her child alone. Left with what she sees as no choice, she works 2 jobs just to survive. Waitressing during the day and stripping at night. A stripper friend tells her she can make way more money if she goes to Vegas. In desperation, she finally does. One week and her nest egg is secure, until she decides to risk it all on the turn of a card.
One week, one card, one chance encounter.
Finn has it all, the lifestyle, the women the world at his fingertips. Until he sees Macey. Somehow he knows her but it’s not until her speaks to her that he realizes he knows her from home. Seeing her lost and desperate, he does something he’s never done before. Offers his help. Be his date for one week and he’ll solve all her money problems. Macey has nothing left and agrees. It’s only a week, what could happen in 7 short days.
It’s not like they’ll fall in love. God, he won’t even kiss her on the lips.
But, love works in mysterious ways and sometimes, it only takes one glance, one touch.
Can a girl from the wrong side of the tracks change a serial womaniser? Can he made up for a lifetime of missed opportunities?
Finn McCormick is one hot, sexy driven man, but he turns out to have a soft side. I loved how he took Macey under his wing and helped her flourish. How he accepted her daughter Morgan into his life too.
Macey is a fiercely protective mother who is willing to put everything on the line for her child, even her heart. Sometimes, she needed a bit more strength, I felt her pain, her happiness. Felt the lost when Finn let her down.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more from the author and this series.

readers are saying about STRIPPED BARE:

Stripped Bare is one of those stories that you

know is going to be great from the first page. It’s funny, extremely sexy,

emotional and heartbreaking which all combine for a sensational second-chance

romance read.

This is a modern day Pretty Woman but so much

better! Richard Gere has nothing on Finn McCormick!!

Oh wow. I have been in love with McLaughlin’s

writing since the start but this one could very much be my favorite book now by

They don’t call it

the Strip for nothing. . . .

In this sinfully sexy Las Vegas

romance from bestselling author Heidi McLaughlin, a man who has it all reunites

with a woman who takes it all off.

Living in Sin City, Finn McCormick is

no stranger to one-night stands, but the last person he expects to find losing

big on the casino floor is a former high school fling. Even though Macey

Webster’s clearly down on her luck, she’s still a knockout, and she’s dressed

like a stripper—because she is one. Drunk off an unfamiliar cocktail

of lust, pity,

and compassion, Finn offers to pay

Macey’s debts if she cuddles up to him around town . . . and does whatever he

wants between the sheets.

Macey came to Vegas for one reason

only: money. She’s got a young daughter to support, and the tips

really are bigger in Vegas. But when she blows her earnings on

blackjack, her guardian angel is the rich boy who once stole her heart and

never called her back. Although Macey would love to turn the tables on Finn,

she can’t afford to refuse his proposition—and soon she’s enjoying herself much

more than she cares to admit. Macey’s used to baring her flesh, but baring her

soul will take far more courage.

Chapter 1

The stench of

deep fry emanates from my clothes. I hate the smell and I know the other girls

can smell it, but I ignore the looks they’re giving me and hustle through the

dressing room to my locker. The older women and the ones that have been

stripping here longer always look down on the younger girls and the newbies.

I’m somewhere in the middle. I stripped here when I was younger, during my

first trimester with my daughter, and then again after she was born when I had

my figure back. Actually, stripping helped me tone as a result of all the pole

work that I had to do. I took some time off after that, but I always come back

because the money is fast and somewhat decent. Each time I leave, though, I say

that it’s for good and that was the last time and yet a few months later, I

always find myself back again, knocking on Lew’s door, and asking for my spot

in the rotation back. Girls come and go around here and in this business you

can’t expect to make a lasting connection with anyone.

I strip down and throw my dress, apron and nylons into my bag as

quickly as possible before the stench of grease becomes any more noticeable. I

change into a thong and bootie shorts, add tassels to my nipples and cover them

with a bra before slipping a tank top over my head and stepping into an old

pair of cowboy boots that I picked up

at the secondhand store. I have an array of costumes meant to hit

the mark on every fantasy a man can have. Cowboys, librarian, naughty

schoolgirl . . . you name it I’m doing it. I need the money. More so now than

ever. My kid is getting older and she’s seeing things she shouldn’t, like her

grandmother being so drunk that she can’t get up to answer the door, or strange

men in the house. She’s ten and shouldn’t have to babysit an adult. Nor should

have to live in the slums, but that’s on me.

Seventeen and pregnant isn’t how I saw my life. I had had enough

of living with barely any food, no new clothes and the strange looks, so I

swore that I was getting out. I was smart, got good grades in high school, but

none of that mattered once I found out I was knocked up and the baby daddy had

already left town. I tried to tell his mother, but she took one look at me and

shut the door. Back then I didn’t, but I do now. I’d take that money and run

right across the tracks, under the bridge and through the fucking blueberry

bushes if it meant my kid wasn’t going to be a victim of a drug deal gone wrong

or end up with a drinking problem by the time she’s a teen.

Morgan though, she’s a good kid who loves to read and is a whiz at

math. She’s all I have in this world and I’ll do anything I have to, to make

sure she has food and clothes.

So I strip at night and wait tables during the day. Depending on

the day or night, one pays better than the other, but they’re jobs that I need.

I have a goal. I want to move Morgan and I into a better neighborhood. One

where kids want to play and not sell drugs. I want her to live in a place where

she feels safe and doesn’t need to hide in the closet of our bedroom because my

mother invited one of her friends over.

My dreams for Morgan are unreachable, I know this, but I try every

day to make them happen. I want such a different life for her that sometimes

when I look out the window of the city bus I’m on and I see other kids her age

walking along the street without a care in the world, I imagine her being one

of those kids. If only . . .

Thank You for Holding by Julia Kent & Elisa Reed

I really enjoyed reading this book. Both authors and new to me, and this book although not part of Ms. Kent’s ‘shopping’ billionaire’ series, definitely has references to those books, not enough to detract from this one, just a little sprinkle to encourage the reader to go buy them lol.

That being said, Thank You for Holding. What a cracker of a story it was. Not quite boy meets girl, love and lose, rather he meets her the day they both start working for the same company. That’s what happened to Ryan. Only before he had the chance to ask Carrie out on a date, Carrie new best friend Jenny’s brother asks her out.

Fast forward 2 years.

Ryan still wants Carrie, but she’s still with the other guy. Other guy, Jamey, has a secret. A huge secret, which only Carrie and his family are unaware of. Everyone else could see it. Hell, the reader can see it before poor Carrie.

But, when Jamey is finally made to see the light, he dumps Carrie and leaves her in the lurch. Carrie is in dire straits. She has Jenny’s wedding to attend and doesn’t want to look like a loser going alone. Enter Ryan to the rescue, he offers to act as her boyfriend to save her feelings. But Ryan isn’t pretending, this is his golden opportunity to show Carrie how he really feels.

I really felt the connection between Ryan and Carrie, their chemistry was fantastic are burned the pages. Ryan is part geek, part alpha and all male. He’s strong, sweet but with a healthy dose of insecurity too.

There are several memorable moments throughout the book that shook his vulnerability, but the best was definitely the battery pack fire and donuts. How the authors came up with that scenario I’ll never know. LOL

This is a really great, laugh out loud, cry and tear your hair out book. The secondary characters were well fleshed, I’m thinking Zeke with be getting a story at some point. All in all I recommend this as a fun read.

Title: Thank You for Holding

Series: On Hold #2

Author: Julia Kent & Elisa Reed

Genre: Romantic Comedy/Contemporary Romance

Release Date: March 21, 2017

Having it all is a fantasy, right?

Carrie Shelton thought her boyfriend was too good to be true. Her best friend’s brother? A guy who loved antiquing? Who cuddled on the couch while watching foodie YouTube clips and talking about artisanal spices? Who helped her accessorize her outfits?

So when he ran off with Kevin, the owner of an antique shop, right before his sister’s wedding, Carrie’s life went from fantasy to nightmare.

As maid of honor, she can’t back out of the wedding. And her ex is the best man – but now he has his own best man.

She needs a date. Stat.

Enter Ryan. Sure, he’s a hot male stripper at the O Spa where she works as junior designer, but he’s a few years younger and just, you know — a friend.

Perfect. She needs a friend more than she needs a boyfriend.

A weekend of playing her boyfriend so she can save face is a lot to ask, but for some reason Carrie doesn’t understand, Ryan’s all in. Enthusiastic, even.

Especially when it comes to physical displays of affection.

Public kisses turn to private confessions, and pretty soon, Carrie can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality.

Because if Ryan’s just pretending he’s in love with her, then why does the chemistry between them — and between the sheets — feel so real?

Carrie can’t settle for almost, though. She’s already done that. She’s not putting her life on hold anymore.

Turns out Ryan won’t, either.

He’s holding out for more.

Thank You For Holding is a STANDALONE in the On Hold series. You do not need to have read book 1 in the series, but after reading about Carrie and Ryan’s friends-to-lovers adventure, you’ll want to. 😉

“How’s Jamey doing?” I ask. I don’t give a rat’s ass about him. Talking about anything that will deflate my ever-growing boner is my goal. Think about Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton. Ken Bone. Betty White.

Perfect. Deflation sequence activated.

“Jamey is so sweet!” Carrie gets that weird look again. Her eyes fill with a mild form of panic, which fades quickly, leaving her chewing on a pen cap. “He got us tickets for a holiday concert and just stopped by with my favorite coffee.”

“Nice. But every guy should do that for the person they’re dating.”

“Really?” She looks so surprised. I hate that she looks so surprised.

“It’s pretty basic Dating 101 stuff, Carrie.”

“Like you know anything about dating,” she lobs back at me. “You haven’t had a girlfriend since I met you.” She walks into her cubicle and nods for me to follow.

My heart just got decimated by a SCUD missile. I can’t look at her. I follow, then pick up one of the metal balls on her Newton’s Cradle and let it clack against the others. The force shoves the ball on the other end to strike out in an arc.

“Well, you know…”

She snorts. “Yeah, I know. Why settle for one woman when you can have a taste of so many?”

I’m not sure when she got the idea that I’m some kind of playboy Casanova manwhore. That’s Zeke. But no matter what I tell her, she doesn’t believe me.

“Right.” Our eyes meet and I can’t breathe. You spend years pretending and hiding your feelings and when those little slivers, fractions of time that don’t show up on a clock, protrude through your facade, you take them as they are.

  Real, raw, and so hard.

A Moment of Madness by Brooklyn Skye

Title: A Moment of Madness

Series: Boston Alibi #2

Author: Brooklyn Skye

Publisher: Entangled: Brazen

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: March 20, 2017

Sailor Carlson comes back to Boston to make amends with her dad, only to find he passed away, and his bar, the Alibi, now belongs to a bearded, grumpy hottie. Mr. Hottie liked her enough for a night of nameless sex on the kitchen counter, but he wants nothing to do with her now he knows who she is.

Ryan Edwards has been running the Alibi for seven years. Being in a bar night after night means he’s no stranger to one-night stands. But when the quirky, beautiful blonde he spent a hot night with shows up at his bar claiming it used to belong to her father, his guard goes right up.

Ryan’s desperate for a waitress, and Sailor wants a chance to work in the place that meant so much to her dad. If only the tenuous trust they establish were as strong as the pesky attraction simmering between them.

The sweater stretched farther, Sailor’s nose pinching with the movement. “This is really gross.” She attempted to wiggle out of the sweater without the wet part touching her—a tricky thing to do, apparently. With the material covering her face and her arms bent above her head, she let out a nervous-sounding laugh. Then her muffled voice echoed from behind the fabric.

“Um…Ryan? Are you still standing there?”

Ryan crossed his arms, running his gaze over the tight white tank she wore beneath the sweater and the sliver of smooth skin that peeked out from below the hem. “Watching you tangle yourself up in a barf sweater? Sure am.”

“Well,” she said, “I know we just met, and this might be awkward for you, but could you give me a little assistance? I seem to be stuck.”

Without hesitation, he stepped closer, taking in the sight before him. Lifting her arms like that…removing the hideous sweater… Ryan would have never expected to see such delicate curves, especially ones that made his fingertips tingle. Suddenly, he wanted to touch her, to grip her tiny waist, palm her round tits, slide his tongue over—

She slammed her eyes closed and buried her head into whatever part of Ryan was available. “Is it over yet?” In her mind, the shelves of bottles tottered above them, a long second before they too would crash down. Death by something called Uncle Dick’s Top Dog? There was worse, but not much.

Ryan shifted his body, carefully lowering Sailor to the ground with his hand cradled protectively around the crown of her head. “Next time you decide to jump,” he whispered—no, growled—directly into her ear, and the primal sound of it triggered a wave of thrill bumps to push along her skin. “Warn me first, so I can catch you and look like a hero.”

“Heh-heh.” Wait, why was she letting that annoying sound spew out of her mouth? His words…next time and hero…

She wanted them.

Didn’t want them.

Why did this whole thing with Ryan have to be so confusing?

“Good news is,” she said back to him to keep her mind from running circles like little Drexie chasing his tail, “I now have a new embarrassing moment. It’s called Not-So-Sexy Girl Takes Out Her Boss. Had it been recorded, I could’ve won ten thousand dollars on one of those funniest home video shows.”

His face appeared in front of hers, an impish grin peeking out from the cover of his beard. “I do have security cameras, you know.”

She poked his chest. “Which you will never, ever watch.”

“Might be entertaining.”

“So would watching the big tough owner get beat up by a girl much smaller than him.”

He let out a chuckle, the sound glorious and chilling in the same. He jerked forward, folded in half, and stopped nose to nose with her. He clasped his hands around her wrists and warm breath hit her face with his words. “Now that’s a beating I would be willing to endure.”

As if on cue, her body pulsed and a tingly burst shot through her core.

Then a deep voice echoed throughout the room. “Should I come back later?” She’d only been around Micah once, but that guy had the burliest voice she’d ever heard. Plus, who else would walk in when there was a CLOSED sign in the window?

He froze. Ryan’s eyes glinted mischievously. Yes, come back later his gaze screamed. Because I have a beating to attend to. And as if to drive home the point, something hard pressed against her. Right. Between. Her. Legs.

Oh, Lordy.

Chasing Kade by Anna Paige

Reviewed by Cee Cee Houston for THE GHOST PEPPER BABES
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. It certainly won’t be the last. I’ll be reading all of this new series for starters. I love discovering new authors and I came across Anna almost by accident as I was reading blurbs for other books. But once I read hers, I was hooked and knew, I HAD to get my hands on this awesome hot little number.
Chasing Kade is about Kade Edenfield, the lead singer in a band called The Thrill of the Chase. He’s a typical bad boy and hot headed with it, or so he seems. He is so bad, his band’s record label sends in PR babysitter, Aubrey Taylor to make them, mostly him, behave or they will have the contract cancelled.
Sparks are struck at first sight, but neither want to admit to the burning attraction pulling them together. But, they can’t fight it and when they give it. It’s so HOT your kindle will melt.
But, all is not as it’s been portrayed and as Aubrey and Kade become closer, she finds out his most guarded secrets. When one is leaked to the press, siting Aubrey as the author, Kade loses control. Can they get over this upset. Will Aubrey be able to prove her innocence? Will Kade believe her and will she be willing to forgive his readiness to throw their new found relationship away?
Guess you’ll just need to pick up your copy and find out.

Title: Chasing Kade

Series: Thrill of the Chase #1

Author: Anna Paige

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: March 17, 2017

There’s no such thing as too much fun…

Incredibly, immeasurably, categorically false.

Try: It’s all fun and games until someone ends up in the tabloids.

Kade Edenfield was rock royalty. If every rock god in history gathered for dinner, his seat would be at the head of the table. He was that good. His band was elevated to a level few ever reached, and he was having the time of his life.

Until one misstep too many landed him on the front page of every gossip rag around the globe, and the band’s label decided to saddle them with a PR priss whose sole mission in life was to suck the fun right out of his.

He wanted her gone.

Until he realized he just plain wanted her.

Aubrey Taylor didn’t ask to be assigned to babysit a band full of troublemakers, but she wasn’t given a choice. Wanted or not, she intended to fix the mess they’d made. She’d do it quickly, efficiently, and then she’d get the hell out of there. Unfortunately, after meeting their openly hostile singer—the one with the notoriously menacing stare—it was clear she was in over her head. When Kade made a point to challenge her at every turn, unafraid of using intimidation to get her to back down, she found herself in even deeper trouble.

While she ‘officially’ resented and feared him, their power struggle secretly turned her on.

She desperately wanted to win their little standoff, but what was she supposed to do when she realized she wanted him even more?

I turned back to the table, not wanting to look at Kade. “Are you aware of how many groups have formed strictly for the two of you?” I asked Kane, navigating away from the hoo-ha pic as quickly as possible and looking up the largest group I’d found. “This one is dedicated strictly to the pursuit of ‘doubling down’ with the Edenfield twins. It’s scary how many thousands—thousands—of members are in this group. All looking to hook up with the two of you. I only found it because the recent pics of Kade have been photoshopped so many times by this group. They’re using a mirror image of Kade, shifting it until it looks like both of you are there, then adding themselves to the pic so they appear to be sandwiched between the two of you. And some of them look startlingly real. That’s how I discovered the group to begin with, I was half-convinced the pics were genuine when I first saw them.”

My fingers flew over the keys, navigating the discussion boards. “They even have ‘elite’ and ‘platinum’ members who all swear they have hooked up with at least one of you—those are platinum—and sometimes both of you—that would be the highly-coveted elite status.” I rolled my eyes, scrolling the list. It was suspiciously long, which made it even less believable than it already was.

Kane leaned over, eyeing the list. “I’d like to think I’d remember all of those.”

“Yeah, but a few might be legit.” This from Kade.

Kane and I both spun to look at him.

“The fuck, dude?” Kane cut his eyes to me. “That’s on the ‘need to know’ list and she didn’t need to know.”

I sat there for a minute trying to school my expression so that they couldn’t see the shock on my face. My mind was trying to formulate a response but I couldn’t conjure a single appropriate reaction.

“Oh, I’m sure she already knows all of our dirty little secrets. How else can she be expected to fix us if she doesn’t know exactly how fucked up we really are?” He glared at me. “Bet that’s why she’s so afraid. She’s seen all the skeletons in the closet.”

“She didn’t know, dumbass. Look at her.” Kane sounded concerned enough that I was momentarily convinced he’d start snapping his fingers in my face to try and check my response.  “She’s… I don’t know what to call it… stunned? Appalled?”

“Intrigued?” Kade hungrily dragged his gaze along my face and neck.

All The Frogs In Manhattan by Carrie Arrons

All The Frogs In Manhattan by Carrie Aarons

This is my first book by Ms. Arrons but it sure won’t be the last. This was a seriously funny, laugh out loud book. The characters were sweet and entertaining. Poor Gemma has been stuck with frog after frog for many a year. But, like any true romantic she keeps searching for that guy. The right one. Her Prince Charming.

The ONE!!!

After one disastrous date leaves her calling in her Auntie Flo card and nearly face planting in the sidewalk. Gemma is saved. Literally by Oliver.

He’s nice, she thinks, cute even, but so not her type.

Oliver thought it was funny and refreshing when he heard Gemma shake off her date by mentioning her period. When he finds out it’s really a thing girls do, he’s taken aback, but he likes Gemma’s honesty.

This story is littered with lots of little quirky, incredibly funny and true mentions of things like this, that most authors veer away from, but Carrie, carries it off with aplomb. Not many authors can make a nervous tummy realistic and hilarious at the same time. The chemistry between Gemma and Oliver isn’t built on insta-love or even lust, rather a mutual decision. But, it wasn’t long before it’s burning up my kindle.

This is definitely one to pick up.

Kudos to Carrie for a brilliant laugh of a book.

Title: All the Frogs in Manhattan

Author: Carrie Aarons

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: March 5, 2017

You know how Cinderella had the whole glass slipper, pumpkin carriage, fairy godmother thing?

Yeah…with foot-destroying stilettos, Uber, and a Twitter horoscope, my life is far from a happily ever after.

In fact, instead of Prince Charming, I end up dating every slimy, scaly, brainless frog in the kingdom of Manhattan. And by frog, I mean all of the stereotypical bad guys that Mom and Lifetime movies warned you about.

The meathead player.
The mommy’s boy.
The namedropper.
The cheapskate.

If they suck at relationships, I’ve probably kissed those cold, clammy lips in the hopes of finding love. Until one day, when one man with commitment issues offers to help me find the Romeo to my Juliet.

But what happens when the frog, who was never supposed to turn into a prince, kisses you at midnight? Ok fine, he propositioned me for some afternoon delight after brunch, but not everything can be straight out of a fairytale.
